Question tags are interrogative fragments that turns a statement into a question.

Example:

Ram sues the bank, doesn’t he?

You did not complete your work, did you?

Rules for writing question tag

Rules:

  • If the sentence is affirmative question tag will be negative and vice-versa.
  • Question tags are framed with the help of pronoun and helping verbs.

Note: we never use noun in a question tag. Refer rule 2.

For collective Nouns:

  • If there is division – It
  • As a whole – They

 

Note: We always use positive question tags if the following words are used in a sentence:

Hardly, Scarcely, Seldom, Rarely, Barely, Few and Little.

 

For Imperative Sentences (those which starts with V1)

Example:

Don’t you laugh in the class, will you?

 

Examples:

I am a student, aren’t I?

I am not a good dancer, am I?

Ram and Sham live together, don’t they?

It is Monday today, isn’t it?

Everything needs change, doesn’t it?

You need not worry for this, need you?
